Background to this project

Project proposed by Neil Laurenson, a Cambridge businessman

  • Has initial backing of Te Waka, the Waikato Regional Economic Development Agency

    • Their 2018-2020 strategy includes investigating waste-to-energy as part of their work programme, “Investigate and develop the potential for the Waikato to be the sustainable energy and circular economy centre for New Zealand, especially in terms of: Waste to energy” (p.15)

  • Factory has been named ‘Kaitiaki’

  • Intends to import waste from around the Pacific

  • Danish engineering company Ramboll has been approached for the project

  • In 2000, the Meremere community (in the Waikato) successfully campaigned against a waste-to-energy incinerator proposed by company Olivine
